Montenegro, one of the world’s newest independent countries, is an example the world should follow when it comes to tourism, it was claimed this week.

The compliment was delivered this week by Jean Claude Baumgarten, president of the World Travel & Tourism Council at the organization’s 7th annual summit in Lisbon, visit-montenegro.com reported.

According to the WTTC, the country is experiencing high tourist growth which will increase by 10 percent annually over the next decade, the report added.

Montenegro became an independent state less than a year ago following a referendum that voted in favor of a split with Serbia, signaling the end of the old Yugoslavia.

Montenegro had previously been an independent nation between 1878 and 1918 until it was united with several other Balkan countries to form Yugoslavia after WWI.
