Montego Bay and Varadero Could Twin in a Matter of Months

The well known tourist destinations of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Varadero, Cuba, are on the way to become twin cities to the benefits of these two resorts, according to Cuban ambassador in Kingston, Gisela García Rivera and MoBay’s mayor Noel Donaldson.

The Jamaica Observer daily quoted the newly appointed diplomat as saying she would make every effort to have the twinning effected in a matter of months.

Varadero and Montego Bay are very similar. They are tourist places and so a close collaboration between the two can be very beneficial, García Rivera noted, while Donaldson cited tourism, trade and education as some areas in which the western resort city could garner benefits.

The ambassador added that there is to be a meeting of Caribbean mayors in Santiago de Cuba in July and that it would be fitting to have the cities twinned ahead of that event.

"Cuba has a very rich tradition in terms of culture, education, sports... and certainly we stand to benefit in these areas," he said.

Montego Bay is currently twinned with Atlanta in the United States, and talks are ongoing to have the city twinned with Hangzhou city in Zhejiang and Perth in Australia, the Observer pointed out.
