Mexico Regains Top Aviation Safety Rating

Mexico now complies with international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, the FAA said last week. The country has been upgraded to a Category 1 rating, based on the results of a November review of Mexico’s civil aviation authority, the FAA reported.

At Mexico’s request, the FAA said it will continue to provide technical assistance to support and maintain the changes the civil aviation authority has made. Mexico received a Category 2 rating in July, which meant Mexican airlines could not establish new service to the U.S. but were allowed to maintain existing service. Mexican airlines now can again add flights and service to the U.S.

“This is excellent news for Mexico tourism,” said Gloria Guevara, Mexico’s secretary of tourism. “It should help drive an increase in travel routes and visitors between Mexico and the United States, particularly during this upcoming holiday period.” With Mexico regaining a Category 1 rating, Aeromexico plans to re-establish codeshare flights with Delta on Dec. 11.
