Mexican Airports Beef Up Security

Mexico´s airports will shell out at least $90 million to install new security systems that will allow X-ray screening of suspected objects in passengers´ luggage.

The new system will be fully implemented in the course of the ongoing year in both public and private airports. According to officials, the whole thing will be ready to go on New Year´s Day 2006.

In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S., the International Civil Aviation Organization changed the Safety and Security Guidelines and established that all luggage traveling in a plane´s baggage compartment must be screened out in order to detect possible dangerous objects.

The new regulations prompted a series of meetings between airport officials and airline representatives in Mexico to discuss a new course of action and procedures.
