MATAMOROSON: A Festival to Dance

MATAMOROSON International Festival is going to be held in Santiago de Cuba on October 15-19 and its activities include street bashesin theaters and public squares, a theoretical colloquium and screenings of son-related documentaries.

This great fiesta of Cuban music will take place in such places as Mariana Grajales Amphitheater, Heredia Theater, the Hall of Son and the Hall of Casa de la Trova. The event is going to be headed by the so-called “Caballero del Son”, master Adalberto Álvarez and it will be sponsored by "Miguel Matamoros" Provincial Music Company and the Cuban Institute of Music.

Santiago de Cuba is the birthplace of son and the Festival is aimed at paying tribute to Miguel Matamoros, one of the most representative figures of Cuban music. Son, according to the statement given by prestigious Doctor of Musicology Danilo Orozco to Sierra Maestra newspaper, was born in the side of Sierra Maestra, Cuba’s most important mountain range. The city housed it and fed it with memorable singers and instrumentalists, who fostered its national and international spreading.

The Organizing Committee of 2014 MATAMOROSON is going to send invitation letters to those who need them. The Festival can be attended by researchers, musicologists, artists and son-related musical projects. The people interested in participating shall send: one picture, curriculum, repertoire, name and last name, passport number, arrival and departure dates and specify the agency that is making the arrangements for their trip.

Upon arriving in Cuba, the attendees are to contact the Organizing Committee and pay 50.00 CUC per person in terms of registration fee, so they can participate in the event and, when it’s done, they will be given general or individual diplomas for their participation.
