Marta Rojas Jaws it Up in Santiago de Cuba

Santiago-born writer and journalist Marta Rojas talked to university students, CITMA workers, researchers from Casa del Caribe and reporters, on her literary and journalistic experiences.

During this meeting, the winner of the José Martí National Journalism Award in 1997 gave some pieces of advice she believes are important when it comes to making literature without putting the journalistic nose aside. She laid emphasis on the essences to have readers visualizing the environment: "Smells, tastes, sounds, are key elements to give the illusion of truth."

Marta Rojas is known as the journalist of Moncada because she witnessed the trial on the events that took place on July 26, 1953. She rigorously wrote on this development and the trial, but her reports were censored by the Bohemia Magazine.

After the triumph of the 1959 Revolution, she continued her work with Bohemia and, subsequently, the Granma Newspaper. Finally, the journalist gave way to the fiction narrator.

Marta Rojas is the author of such novels as: El columpio de Rey Spencer Santa lujuria (published in 1998 and 2000). Both works were studied during the Afrohispa Literature Congress, held at the University of Arkansas. El harén de Oviedo (2003) and Inglesa por un año (2006). She was given the Carpentier novel award for the last one.
