Kenya May Soon Have Four More World Heritage Sites

Four landmarks in Kenya are set to be listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, according to the country`s minister for National Heritage, Najib Balala.

The minister said that he would lead a delegation to France to present a report about the sites, which include the Mombasa Old Town, Fort Jesus, the Great Rift valley and the country`s Coastal traditional sacred forests known here as `Kayas` to UNESCO so that they could be listed as world heritage sites.

“Documentation of Fort Jesus and Mombasa Old Town is already complete and has already been forwarded to UNESCO for consideration,” Balala announced in Mombasa late Tuesday while launching the Research Institute of Swahili Studies of Eastern Africa (RISS-EA).

Other sites in the country include Mt. Kenya, Africa´s second highest peak, and the Indian Ocean seaport of Lamu, about 124 miles north of Mombasa, the country´s major seaport.
