Jamaican Company Opens Doors for Culinary Heritage Tour

Walkerswood Caribbean Foods, a Jamaican culinary company famous for its jerk seasoning, has entered the epicurean tour market with a product called Walkerswood Jerk Country Tour, described as a fun journey into Jamaica’s food heritage, “which takes the visitor from the field to the table”.

The 45-minute tour is offered daily between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Walkerswood’s headquarters in the village of Walker’s Wood, a few miles from Ocho Rios on Jamaica’s north coast. According to the company, in addition to the tour, cooking classes are soon to follow.

For the new tour, guests gather at the Walkerswood’s Pimento Porch Clubhouse and head off to the Jerk Pit for a lesson in cooking jerk-style food, followed by samples.

Next is Mother Thyme’s Spice Garden to meet Mother Thyme herself at her 18th-century “wattle and daub” hut, surrounded by herbs and spices used to prepare Caribbean favorites. Then, it’s on to the Walkerswood factory for a first-hand view from the mezzanine level of the production and bottling of some of Walkerswood 21 products.

The tour is priced at $15 for adults; children up to 12 are half price. Lunch tours are offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include a Jamaican buffet lunch for an additional charge of $12 to $20.
