Isabel Borrego Swears In as Spain’s New Tourism Minister

Isabel Borrego has officially taken office as Spain’s new State Secretary of Tourism, along with other officials of that ministry, during a ceremony headed by the minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, Jose Manuel Soria.

Appointed by the Mariano Rajoy administration shortly before the end of 2011, Borrego is in charge of a Comprehensive Plan of Tourism Promotion for Spain, as promised by the new president, Mariano Rajoy, within his election program and his inaugural speech before the Congress, in which he underlined that “tourism is our main exporting industry.”

Borrego, a representative of the PP party in the Balearic Islands during the ongoing legislature, told Europa Press that she is taking the position with a strong commitment to the sector and the people, and the task will be pleasantly carried out. Furthermore, she considered an “honor for Baleares” the fact that President Mariano Rajoy had turned to someone from that location to be the State Secretary of Tourism.

Born in Palma in 1968, Borrego graduated in Laws and has a Master’s Degree in Construction and Real Estate Sector Laws. She has developed a professional career in Baleares, especially linked to the real estate sector and housing.

Borrego has been a member of the PP party in Palma since 1989 and got a seat in the Congress for Baleares during the last elections. As a tradition, State secretaries are bound to quit their deputy positions.

After her appointment last Friday, the sector has positively appraised the new Secretary of Tourism’s “town-planning profile”, as she could be helpful in terms of hotel joint ownership, something related to her awareness of the Spanish tourism reality as she comes from Palma de Majorca.
