International Project against Seismic Risks Underway in Santiago de Cuba

A project aimed at strengthening management capacity for seismic risk reduction is underway in Cuba with the sponsorship of the Curator’s Office (OCC) and the CARE International organization.

The initiative is mainly carried out in three popular councils of the urban historic area of Santiago de Cuba, where the population and community authorities interact in actions of training, information and advice for the construction of houses based on anti-seismic norms.

The Municipal Assembly of the People’s Power, the National Center for Seismological Research and the Architects of the Community enterprise of Technical Services also contribute to this effort in order to achieve better preparedness against earthquakes.

In addition to houses, the program prioritizes public health and educational buildings, in an area where the town was founded almost 500 years ago.

In accordance with the results obtained in the Cuban city that is most vulnerable to earthquakes, these experiences will be expanded to other eastern provinces, which are also shaken by these earth tremors.

The most recent tremor occurred on the night of August 25, with a magnitude of 4.2 in the la Richter scale and was perceptible in all of Santiago de Cuba municipalities and in other territories of Granma and Guantanamo. No human or material damages were reported.
