Healthcare Remains Top Priority in Santiago de Cuba

Within the framework of the celebration on December 3 of the Latin American Medicine Day, Santiago de Cuba announces that its child mortality rate stand in 3.3 per a thousand born alive, the lowest number in its history thanks to the implementation of new health technologies and the strict follow-up to pregnant women and their babies.

Such figure reflects the combination of intentions, resources and actions undertaken by the medical community linked to the Child Maternal Program (PAMI is the Spanish acronym) in Santiago’s five maternity hospitals. The South Maternity Hospital, commonly known as Angels Clinic, is an example of outstanding results and, like other centers of its kind, the work is aimed at guaranteeing the life quality of newborns, minute after minute.

Doctor Liudmila Yolanda Regueifero Díaz, explained that the results obtained through October stand for the perseverance of the work carried out by neonatologists, pediatricians, specialists in respiratory diseases, technicians and nurses when it comes to taking care of newborn babies. She pointed out that they are constantly working and there are new methods to improve the neuromotor, sensorial and cognitive development of these children.

In Santiago de Cuba there are many strategies targeting the direct work with women of ages between 12 and 49, in an effort to modify risk factors so they can face pregnancy in better conditions and, therefore, guarantee the their health quality and their babies’.

According to executives of PAMI in the territory, family planning attention has been boosted by means of measures that have been established to promote both fertility and birth rate, including the work with fertile couples in the nine municipalities and at the Provincial Center of Assisted Reproduction.

Undoubtedly, the Child Maternal Program in Santiago de Cuba has gained momentum in terms of organization, work control and passion dedicated to the sacred action of saving the life of a baby.
