Haiti Launches Rehabilitation Project at Sans-Souci Palace

One of the Caribbean’s most famous historical sites is getting a boost. Haiti’s government announced that it had begun a project to rehabilitate the Sans-Souci Palace near the town of Milot in the north of the country.

The plan includes several preservation projects, including the reconstruction of a retaining wall and the building. The project will cost around $894,000 USD, according to a figure from the office of Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe.

The early 19th century palace was built by Haiti’s King Henri-Christophe. The palace forms part of Haiti’s National History Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Attracting tourism to the site is a major prong of Haiti’s renewed tourism push.
