Guyana Wants Increased Flights with three Airlines

Guyana is in discussions with three airlines to increase services on the heels of one Anglo-Canadian carrier filing for bankruptcy and cutting planned services to Georgetown.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad said he has already started talks with Delta, Skyservice and Caribbean Airlines to increase their services.

This comes against the background of a decision by transatlantic budget carrier, Zoom Airlines, to pull out of the Toronto/Georgeotwn route and the Gatwick-London/Georgetown route that was scheduled to start November 15.

Mr. Prashad said Zoom’s move had created a void in the tourism industry and the government was working diligently to fill that space.

Minister Prashad said Skyservice and Caribbean Airlines have agreed to provide immediate assistance to travelers affected by the Zoom pullout. He said they have added an additional flight to ensure that passengers are not stranded.

In the meantime, British Airways has also been trying to pick up the slack left by Zoom Airlines in Bermuda, announcing special fares to help passengers get home.
