Grenada´s Authorities Wants to See More Investment in Local Carnival

A call has been made for the government of Grenada and the private sector to invest more money into the planning and marketing of the island carnival celebration.

Held annually during the second weekend in August, the carnival celebration, according to recently appointed chairman of the Grenada Carnival Committee, accounts for almost one third of the island annual national income.

“An average of $100 million is injected into the national economy from people coming to the country and not those who are already on the island as a result of carnival activities,” a source close to the Carnival´s organizing committee said recently to members of the press.

Statistics at the Grenada Board of Tourism has revealed that July and August has the highest amount of visitors to the country and also the highest income injected into the economy.

The 2006 carnival celebrations also mark the start of a year long cultural exposition aimed at promoting the island´s cultural heritage to visitors who will be attending games held in Grenada for Cricket World Cup 2007.
