Grand Cayman Adds Dive Attraction

The newest attraction in the Cayman Islands is a 13-foot sculpture of a mythological creature, half ancient warrior and half seahorse.

The bronze sculpture, called Guardian of the Reef, will be placed on a 4-foot-high concrete pedestal and sunk in 60 feet of water on April 12, about 50 feet off Grand Cayman's northwest coast.

Divetech, a dive operator in Grand Cayman, commissioned the sculpture from Canadian artist Simon Morris, to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.

"The Guardian will serve as a new dive site and as a long-term reminder to all of us about the need to protect our reefs," said Divetech owners Jay and Nancy Easterbrook.

Divetech will use the sculpture to focus attention on ocean conservation. One dollar from every dive made at the site will go to a local conservation education program.
