France’s XL Airways Starts Weekly Flights to Varadero

France-based air company XL Airways has started weekly flights to Cuba’s Varadero Beach, a service that will remain in place till April 2011 and that promises to increase the number of French sunbathers flocking to the island nation’s number-one travel destination.

The inaugural flights touched down in Varadero’s Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport, in the province of Matanzas –some 89 miles east of Havana- carrying 160 passengers. The flights will be operated through the Havanatur-Paris and Evolution Voyage tour operators, while ground travel packages will be delivered by incoming agency Gaviota Tours.

Cuban tourism authorities expect this stepped-up service out of France to dramatically jack up tourist arrivals from that European nation which currently ranks eighth among the island nation’s top outbound markets.

Varadero Beach, a 20-mile-long strip of powder-thin sand and crystal-clear water some 89 miles east of Havana, will once again this year welcome a million visitors on Dec. 23.
