The Former Chess House of Yore

The wealthy and prestigious Galicians that lived in Santiago wanted to be recognized by the high society of the city that had taken them as its own children. That’s the reason why they founded the Os Pinos Novos Art, Sport and Recreation Association.

It was created by the Galician people living in the city in order to be the venue of their meetings, fiestas and other recreational activities, in an effort to give its members "cultured and moral" spaces and strengthen ties. They also needed an organization to help them keep the Galician language and history alive.

It stood out in carnivals with its themed floats, as well as in the halls of the Central Delegation’s social club.

María Esther Fernández, a Galician descendant recalls that typical Galician suits where sold right in front of the Cathedral. And glamorous balls were held at the place that currently stands as the Chess House.

There was always a good reason to organize a ball. These kinds of activities were used to raise funds and gain prestige and recognition within the high spheres of the society in Santiago.

María Esther comments: "They used to organize parties there, selling pies and drinks. On New Year’s Eve the fiestas were up to 4 a.m. They always had a motive to come together in the city: Mother’s Days, carnivals, and I remember the Flowers Fiesta. They were awesome. We used to dance danzón, guaracha, bolero and even conga. The Galician Choral Society played both Galician and Cuban music".

Galicians were fond of hanging around with their countrymen, partying, having fun. That joy helped them put aside the stress of the daily work and the yearning for their families overseas.
