Florida Offering Free Gas to Tourists
Skyrocketing gas prices have prompted one county to pony up free gas as an incentive for tourists. According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau will award $25 gas cards to anyone who books a two-night stay at select hotels through its website or Facebook page.
The bureau is expected to spend up to $100,000 on gift cards, and another $100,000 on marketing. "Having them in our hotel rooms is worth the investment in their gas tanks," bureau president Nicki Grossman said.
Some experts fear that gas prices may cut into what tourists are willing to spend on travel this summer. According to the Sentinel, record tourism was a bright spot in South Florida's economy last year.
