Editorial Oriente Joins the Celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Santiago de Cuba

With historic and cultural literary novelties, and the reprinting of classic books of Cuban literature, Editorial Oriente, the first publishing house with national scope although it isn’t based at the capital, will join the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of this old colonial village, through July 2015.

Aimara Vera, director of the institution, told Sierra Maestra that among the proposals, counting on the funding by the City Curator’s Office, Historic Pieces of News (1902-1958) is an interesting chronicle collection of Santiago de Cuba, gathered by Alcibíades Poveda, a diligent researcher of Santiago’s history.

Two texts on Antonio Maceo, the Cuban mambi hero labeled Bronze Titan because of his courage, are going to be launched as part of Editorial Oriente’s proposals.

"One of them is Antonio Maceo: The Bronze Titan in Cuba’s Independence War, by Philip Foners, and the second one is entitled Antonio Maceo in Historiography. Treatment, Controversial Aspects of his Biography, by researcher Zoe Sosa Borjas. Both texts make up the publishing house’s Bronze collection, with the co-edition by Casa del Caribe", Aimara Vega pointed out.

Researcher Emilio Cueto’s Music in Santiago de Cuba is also going to be launched in collaboration with that institution.

Editorial Oriente is promoting, along with Caguayo Foundation, the Artistic and Literary Culture in Santiago de Cuba. Half a Millennium project is an effort to rescue the most relevant aspects of this eastern territory’s spiritual richness.

This project includes several texts, such as Protagonists of Visual Arts. The Environment, by authors José Veigas and Antonio Desquirón; Literary Santiago, by León Estrada; Swashbuckling.

The Adventure of the Screen, by poet Reinaldo Cedeño, and The Word in the Air. Memoirs of Santiago Radio, by journalist Eric Caraballoso.

The reprinting of An Artist in Cuba, a volume that reflects the thoughts of Walter Goodman when he first visited Santiago de Cuba, in 1864, will be among Editorial Oriente’s offerings.
