Donald Trump Offers $1 Million Sweepstakes for Caribbean Golf Tournament
American tycoon and resort developer Donald Trump is offering $1 million as the grand prize for the top golf tournament in a regional tournament he hopes will be an annual event in the Caribbean island of St Vincent.
The invitational only event for 100 golfers will be held in May to launch the Trump International Golf Club at Raffles Resort on Canouan, in the southern Grenadines.
“I am going to personally give one million dollars to the one golfer who can prove they have the skill and nerve it takes to survive under the most extreme pressure on one of the world´s most demanding courses. Because I´m not going to just give $1 million away, they´re going to have to take it,” Trump said at a press conference in Manhattan last week as he issued a challenge to golfers around the world.
The 2006 Trump Million Dollar Invitational at Raffles Resort Canouan will be held from May 21 to 26. The tournament will be seen as a seeding ground for new talent as it is open to all professional or amateur golfers 18 and older, who are not currently members of the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Champions Tour, Nationwide Tour or European Tour.
Players will compete in the 54-hole stroke play tournament. The entry fee is $15,000 per player. All entry fees collected will be awarded, creating a US$1.5 million dollar prize pool. Players are responsible for all travel, lodging, meals and other expenses associated with their participation in the event.
The Trump Million Dollar Invitational is a three-day competition without the benefit of handicap. The players with the lowest 10 scores will advance to the grand prize matches on May 26.
The 10 finalists will compete in a nine-hole play-off where one player will be eliminated on each hole until there are only two players left, who will then play the final hole for the $1 million grand prize.
