Dominican President Cuts Ribbons on Two Air Traffic Control Centers

President Danilo Medina on Monday cut the ribbons on two air traffic control centers built by the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) at a cost of US$15.6 million at Punta Caucedo, Santo Domingo province, and Punta Cana, La Altagracia province.

IDAC director Alejandro Herrera, who called the facilities the most modern and efficient  in the entire Caribbean and Central America, stressed the link with the Airport Corporation of the East (Cae), which in his view shows the private sector and public sectors’ push for economic development.

Punta Caucedo’s air traffic control center operates in a building which shares energy from the Las Americas International Airport (AILA) substation and also relies on its own power plant.

It also features communications and radar data processing systems, six 70-inch screens and operating consoles, among other equipment.

Punta Cana’s center has four controller positions, 10 aeronautical frequencies with four transmitters each and two independent receivers, among other technology.

Tourism mogul Frank Rainieri, president of Grupo Punta Cana, said the centers are among the most important steps in Dominican Republic civil aviation in the last 15 years.
