Dominican Art Dazzles Germany with Outstanding Display

The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism -Mitur- with the collaboration of the Dominican Embassy in Berlin, organized a collective show entitled “Dominican Art Today” at the Freies Museum Berlin. The opening ceremony was held on October 9, with a cocktail party offered by Rafael Calventi, a Dominican diplomat.

The exhibition opened on October 1 and was organized by the director of Mitur’s Tourism Promotion Office in Germany, Petra Cruz, by means of the Cultural Tourism division, chaired by Altagracia Olmos, who thanked the Tourism minister, Francisco Javier García, for his wholehearted support to the Dominican art.   

Likewise, they commented that the show was “curated” by Marianne de Tolentino, director of the Fine Arts National Gallery, and experts Rafael Pérez Concepción and Richard Moreta were in charge of the “co-curatorship”.

They pointed out that the works included in the display were created by first-line Dominican artists Altagracia Carrasco, Inés Tolentino, José García Cordero (Chichi), Radhamés Mejía, Jorge Pineda, Luís Muñoz, Yolanda Naranjo, Marcos Lora Read, Omar Lì-Sánchez and Polibio Díaz.

They also stressed that the opening ceremony was attended by a significant number of people, including artists from different European capitals, and the Dominican Republic’s Ambassador to Germany, Rafael Calventi, praised the quality of the exhibit and said to be pleased to showcase such a graphic display on our art.

During the opening cocktail, the curator and president of the Freies Museum Berlin’s Friends Club, Darius Bork, expressed his satisfaction for this show and saluted the artists, members of the diplomatic corps and the rest of the attendees.

Freies Museum Berlin is an institution devoted to spreading contemporary art within the local and international context by taking into account the most influential ideas and concepts of modern artistic movements.

The show is made up of paintings, drawings, videos and sculptures. The museum arrangements were carried out by paying attention to the creative individuality of each artist, thus putting the artworks in intimate and independent spaces.
