Disney Cruise Line Unveils Names for Newbuilds
Disney Cruise Line will name its two new ships the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy. Construction on the two ships commenced last week at Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard. The Dream is scheduled to enter service in 2011, the Fantasy in 2012.
“Last week, steel cutting began on our next two Disney cruise ships. Today, I’m pleased to announce their names,” said Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger at the company’s annual shareholders meeting on Tuesday.
“The names are very telling of our brand and are part of our history,” stated Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. “Disney is known for making dreams come true, and for creating worlds of fantasy that go beyond the imagination. The names are a natural choice for our ships.”
They are also names already used by Carnival Cruise Lines. The Carnival Fantasy is sailing and the Carnival Dream will make its debut in September as the line’s largest ship.
It is common in the industry for ship names to be used by more than one cruise line. Disney’s two 128,000-ton ships will more than double the cruise line’s passenger capacity.
