Cuba’s National Applied Electromagnetism Center

For over two decades, the Santiago de Cuba-based National Applied Electromagnetism Center (CNEA is the Spanish acronym) has focused its work on social development, without putting technological research and innovation aside, although it also explores ways for sustainable economic development.

“Exporting the first magnetic air conditioners aimed at the agricultural sector in Mexico pays off, but it also opens a promising path for the Santiago-based entity to follow suit.”

That’s the opinion of Rebeca Conde García, Master’s degree in Sciences and director of Research Result Transfer at the institution, who points out that the exportation of the center’s flagship product represents an income of nearly 3 thousand CUC and gives the institution the opportunity to close its cycle of research, development and marketing.

"The next step to be taken targets the work with the autonomous university of Chapingo so we can join the national program against starvation that is being developed by that high study center and funded by FAO", the CNEA specialist said.

The exportation of magnetic air conditioners to Mexico and the installation of those devices in all Cuban universities, as an alternative to improve the energy efficiency in those institutions, are two of the National Applied Electromagnetism Center’s most recent achievements. This is the only 2014 National Vanguard science entity in the province.

“Among the challenges to be faced by the CNEA” – Master’s degree in Science Malek Campos Sofia, director of the center, explains – “we have to sell that technology to other Latin American countries that have already said to be interested in acquiring the product; while we are to foster other scientific results, such as the Ferromagnetic Particle Separator, with applications in the industry, and the Local Magnetic Stimulator (NaK), related to the public health sector.

The National Applied Electromagnetism Center, founded on January 16, 1992, is a multidisciplinary scientific institution that applies and does research into electromagnetism in such sectors as industry, medicine, agriculture and environment, in an effort to obtain national and international social results.

Furthermore, the center is a member of Santiago de Cuba’s Productive Scientific Circuit and stands as a national and international benchmark in terms of researches in that knowledge area. During these 20 years of work, it has been given several prizes for its scientific activity, including the National Award to the Creativity and Technological Innovation in 2003.
