CTO foundation awards record number of scholarships for 2003

The CTO Foundation, the scholarship program of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), has increased the number of opportunities it provides for Caribbean nationals studying tourism/hospitality-related disciplines. This year, the Foundation awarded more scholarships and grants than it has done in any previous year.

In 2003, the CTO Foundation provided support for fifteen Caribbean nationals pursuing tourism/hospitality studies within and outside the region at a cumulative cost of over US$70,000.00.

Winners of the 2003 CTO Foundation scholarships are Suzette Hines of Jamaica who was awarded the Michael Manley scholarship; and from Barbados, Shenelle O’Neale (who won the American Airlines Scholarship), Wendy Sealy and Camille Clarke. The four scholarships totaled US$48,000.

All four winners are studying at the Masters level in various tourism-related disciplines – Ms. Hines in International Hotel and Tourism Management at Oxford Brookes University; Ms. O’Neale in Tourism in Developing Countries at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland; Ms. Sealy in Tourism Marketing and Ms. Clarke in Tourism Management, both at the University of Surrey.

The CTO Foundation also provided eleven study grants to persons pursuing different levels of certification in tourism/hospitality and language training.

The CTO Foundation, set up in 1997, is registered in New York State as a Not-for-Profit Corporation, formed exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Its main aim is to provide scholarships and study grants to students and industry personnel who are Caribbean nationals, from CTO-member countries, who wish to pursue studies in the areas of tourism/hospitality and language training. The Foundation supports individuals who demonstrate high levels of academic achievement and leadership potential and who express a strong interest in making a contribution to Caribbean tourism.
