(On with the Countdown: 359 Days to Go) Pharmaceutical Industry Updates Technology

The Eastern Pharmaceutical Laboratory brings its technology up to date to guarantee the quality of its products. It is managed by BIOCUBAFARMA Business Group and features four productive units, one of which is based in Bayamo, Granma province.

Santiago de Cuba’s Eastern Pharmaceutical Laboratory is in charge of producing liquid medicaments, oral rehydration salts and plastering bandages, and significant volumes of parenteral saline solution, concentrated solutions for hemodialysis and oral tablets for healthcare institutions in the country.

The technological updates applied in the industry contribute to the improvement of the quality of the process and final products, and that’s the case of the Parenteral Saline Solution Plant with an investment over 3 million pesos.

Osmar Santiesteban Bisset, Chief of the Saline Solution, Hemodialysis and Plastering Bandage Plants, pointed out that two autoclaves were installed along with one pure steam generator that guarantees the quality of serums, boosts the production in 15 million units a year and, of course, humanizes the work developed by the operators.

The institution is presently working to achieve productive stability and the possibility to export its products. “We’re also going to introduce complex products, as well as 100-mililiter bags with metronidazole, which will progressively include other products", he said.

Tablets will also do well out of this modifications and they are number one in terms of exports. Ludmila Santos López, Chief of Tablet and Powder Plant, explained that they were given a punch press and two processing lines, so the productiveness of the plant has considerably grown and, in terms of exports, they have three products that are mainly marketed in Latin America. The institution will soon include other generic products which are in great demand in the international market.

The operators working at the Plastering Bandage Plant, with a three-decade-old technology, fulfill their production plans and they are the only ones supplying the product needed to provide one of the most important orthopedic treatments when it comes to dealing with osseous conditions.

Luis Carlos de la Peña Sánchez, Team Leader of Plastering Bandages, details that the improvement process is related to the introduction of the plastic center and bag sealing in the roll, which increases the quality of the plastering bandage and keeps it in better conditions, positive characteristics in terms of the service provided to hospital of the Cuban healthcare system.
