CND´s Latest Poll Shows Six out of Ten Voters Reject the $5 Surcharge to Be Levied on Tourists Visiting the Dominican Republic

Caribbean News Digital is wrapping up today a two-week poll on the $5 surcharge the government of the Dominican Republic wants to levy on each and every tourists visiting the country. In all, the survey logged 618 votes. Nearly 60 percent of respondents (367) voted against this measure.

Some people voiced concern over the possibility that such a surcharge could make a dent in the number of incoming visitors to the country, arguing that “tourists are already paying too many taxes” and that “the government should not charge sunbathers with more costs they are not supposed to be saddled with.

A total 147 voters agree with the surcharge (23.7 percent) because they relieve it´s fair. For most voters, many countries apply surcharges like that and tourists should contribute more to the advance of the local travel industry and to the preservation of those regions they visit.

Last but not least, 105 people (17 percent) said they didn´t know anything about the issue. A considerable chunk of these readers are English speakers.
