LAN Peru, an affiliate of Chile´s LAN Airways that holds 80 percent of the Peruvian market, apologized this week for airing an on-board promotional video with denigrating images of Peru.

"We understand the angry generated by our in-flight promotional videos with images that have hurt deep the pride and feelings of the Peruvian people," the company stated in a press release.

The clip -played a few days ago- showed the streets of Lima teeming with trash, men urinating in broad daylight, dirty hotels with no water supply and other heart-wrenching images.

According to LAN Peru, the short documentary had been shot seven years ago by a British publicity company and was aimed at backpackers.

The scandal over the in-flight videos reached all the way to senior officials, members of Parliament, politicians and the national press.
