Cartagena Loses Cruises to Insecurity

Reigning insecurity and uncertainty in Colombia have already prompted cruise companies to cancel a few calls to the country’s seaport of Cartagena. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe huddled recently in Miami with representatives from some of the world’s major cruise liners in an effort to clinch a steady inflow of vessels to the ever-shrinking Colombian Caribbean.

The security issue continues to be the biggest hurdle for the development of receptive tourism in that South American nation. At the end of the powwow, attendants left a window of opportunity ajar for cruises to sail back to San Andres. “But there’s nothing in the bag yet,” a source close to the negotiations indicated.
