Cargo Ship Accident Closes Dive Site in BVI

One of the most popular dive sites in the British Virgin Islands remains off-limits to divers and snorkelers after a cargo ship ran aground in the Marine National Park, site of the wreck of the RMS Rhone.

The ship, which was headed from Tortola to St. Maarten when it crashed into the rocks near the dive site, did not hit the RMS Rhone, a British mail ship that sank with 125 people aboard in 1969. The British Virgin Islands created an 800-acre national park around the wreck in 1980.
