Cancun to Invest $50 Million to Enhance Airport Runway

The Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) is planning to spend some $50 million to build a new runway for the Cancun International Airport, sources close to the deal told Caribbean News Digital.

In addition to the runway, the same group will funnel cash to revamp the terminal´s infrastructure.

According to Aaron Dychter, undersecretary of transportation in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, the increasingly larger amount of people traveling to the destination has prompted the group and local authorities to act quickly.

Mr. Dychter explained that 93 percent of the land where the new tarmac will be built belongs to the state of Quintana Roo. Officials are holding talks with the owners of the remaining 7 percent of the terrain.

The Cancun International Airport has always played a major role in the development of the Mayan Riviera, one of Mexico´s booming travel destinations.
