Cancun Celebrates 2012 Mayan Year of Rebirth with Special Events

Cancun is offering dozens of special events through Dec. 21 in celebration of the destination’s rebirth in the year 2012, which closes out the traditional Mayan calendar and welcomes a new era. For centuries, the world has speculated on the year 2012, which was calculated by the ancient Mayans and announces the end of an era and the beginning of a new age.

Xcaret, Cancun’s eco-archeological park, is offering several themed events for families to explore Mayan culture. From Oct. 30 to Nov. 2, travelers can learn about Mayan history and its diverse characteristics across regions through the Day of the Dead. A nightly show, Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, will commemorate the Mayan culture between Dec. 1 and 21 in the Tlachco area of the park.

On Dec. 21 and 22, visitors may watch the freeing of 104 macaws, which will fill the sky with a red glow as the majestic birds fly away. From Dec. 1 to 21, travelers can take guided tours of jungle trails. The Island restaurant will offer Xcaret guests the opportunity to celebrate together the rebirth of the Mayan calendar on the night of Dec. 21 at a gala dinner that will include dancing, a traditional meal and a special tribute.

Xel-ha, an ecological park laying claim to being largest natural aquarium in the world with a large lagoon that juts into the Caribbean Sea, will host events to celebrate the destination’s renewal, including monthly yoga and meditation sessions by the ocean offer guests harmony and peace with the most breathtaking backdrop. Dates include Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Nov. 24, and Dec. 17 and 22.

On Dec. 20 and 22, the park will host evening candlelight ceremonies to celebrate the coming of the new era among a sea of floating candles. The park will also host nightly dinner parties from Dec. 17 to 22, where guests can observe and learn from local astronomers as they explain Mayan astronomical predictions.
