BWIA to Halt Washington-Trinidad Service on October 10

BWIA, which announced it will shut down operations as of December 31, already has moved to cut some services and will discontinue its roundtrip, thrice-weekly Washington-Trinidad service, effective October 10.

“This decision was taken after analysis of the route confirmed a trend of low passenger volume vs. the overall cost of operating the services, resulting in significant financial losses,” said Peter Davies, BWIA’s CEO.

BWIA is contacting all affected passengers to accommodate them on other carriers. When BWIA ceases operations on December 31, a new carrier, Caribbean Airlines, is scheduled to begin service early in 2007. The Trinidadian government will remain as the major shareholder in the new airline.

Although specific routes have not been disclosed, plans calls for the carrier to offer regional transport within the Caribbean region and on several major international routes served by BWIA.
