British Airways, KLM Increasing Fuel Surcharge

British Airways jacked up the fuel surcharge on its long-haul flights from April 21 as a result of further rises in the price of fuel.

The long-haul fuel surcharge on tickets sold and issued in the UK will increase from £30 per sector to £35 per sector (£70 return trip).

The short-haul fuel surcharge will remain unchanged at £8 per sector (£16 a return trip).

British Airways will look to increase its fuel surcharges to similar levels on long-haul flights sold in overseas markets.

In the same breath and in response to soaring fuel prices, KLM also hiked its fuel surcharge by €5 per stretch on all long-haul flights.

This increase, imposed on tickets issued as of April 15, 2006, will be withdrawn once the barrel price drops below $65 for 30 consecutive days.

With this latest increase the fuel surcharge will amount to €45 per stretch within the intercontinental network.

A surcharge will not be adjusted on European routes, which means that within Europe the fuel surcharge will remain €15 per stretch.
