Bodies of Spanish, Italian Tourists Found in Mexican Caribbean

The bodies of a two tourists, a Spanish woman and an Italian man, were found last Saturday in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Local investigators are probing this double homicide case, official sources said.

According to William Bastarrachea de Leon, chief of police in the state of Quintana Roo, the bodies were found near Tulum, a small town some 80 miles south of Cancun.

The two dead tourists were identified as Martha Toullat Vallverde, 26, from Barcelona, and Matias Mezzetti, also 26, from Italy´s Verona.

Law enforcement officers reported the two trekkers had arrived in Mexico from Madrid on November 18 and were staying in a rustic cabin located 4 miles east of Tulum. They were supposed to leave the country on December 2.

The two tourists, that were found naked by a local peasant and show signs of multiple knife wounds, were last seen together at a nearby beach on December 8.

Chief Bastarrachea explained the bodies were handed in to Spanish and Italian consulate officials in Quintana Roo to be flown to their countries of origin.
