Bermuda Names Wayne L. Furbert Minister of Business Development, Tourism

Bermuda named Wayne L. Furbert minister of business development and tourism, replacing Patrice K. Minors, who becomes minister of economy, trade and industry, announced Paula A. Cox, Bermuda’s premier. Minors, a member of Bermuda’s parliament since 2003, became tourism minister in November 2010 after serving as minister of health and family services.

Furbert began as an elected official in 1993, and has since served as minister of community and cultural affairs; minister of transport; and minister of housing, health and social services. Bermuda is seeking to reverse a “struggling” tourism industry, which recently witnessed three cruise lines announce plans to reduce service to the island.

Furbert, a certified public accountant, graduated from the University of Toledo with degrees in science and education. He currently is pursuing a doctoral degree in business administration. “Our proximity, pink sand beaches, turquoise waters and thriving arts and culture are just a few of the assets that we need to maximize so the world knows that Bermuda is a place for all seasons and all reasons,” said Furbert.
