Bermuda Airport Reopens after Gonzalo

Less than two days after Hurricane Gonzalo hit Bermuda, L.F. Wade Airport reopened at 5 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Bermuda Department of Airport Operations. The causeway and the main road serving the airport reopened Saturday afternoon.

Gonzalo made landfall Friday night as a Category 2 storm, packing winds of 110 mph. The majority of hotels are open and able to accept guests, according to a statement from the Bermuda Tourism Authority.

Cruise ship calls scheduled for Sunday and Monday were canceled, but the Celebrity Infinity remains on schedule for a Wednesday call. Public ferry service has resumed; bus service is set to begin once an assessment of all roads is completed.

Gonzalo was the second storm in a week to hit the island. Tropical Storm Faye drilled Bermuda on Oct. 12, damaging homes and knocking down trees and power lines. The British Royal Navy has deployed a frigate to help with cleanup and repairs.
