Beaches for Mexican Caribbean Residents Still on Hold

A few months ago, Cancun´s Federal Maritime & Ground Zone asked the country´s Department of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources for three locations that should be turned into public beaches. No response to that petition has yet been given.

Ricardo Gongora Escalante, head of the Coastal Planning Department and Zofemat, indicated the request was filed in the course of 2003. However, SEMAMAT has done nothing but comply with the countless requirements demanded by the federal body. According to Mr. Escalante, a formal reply could take years.

The three petitioned beaches are Las Uvas, Parque del Sol (a.k.a. Calelita) and Caleta. Mr. Escalante noted that even though these are public beaches with free access for everyone, their intention is to allow the community to enjoy these beaches to the utmost, a reason why his group is planning to outfit them with restrooms, shower stalls, umbrellas, tables, trash bins and benches.
