Bayamo Celebrates in Full Swing
On the occasion of the 145th anniversary of the first time Cuba’s National Anthem was sung and the 500 years of the foundation of Bayamo City, the 19th Fiesta de la Cubanía will include a varied program of artistic, recreational, academic and historic activities to take place in the capital city of Granma, on October 16 - 20.
Carlos Rodríguez Lora, executive secretary of the organizing committee, gave some details during a press conference on the activities and the list of special guests to be attending these cultural events.
Rodríguez Lora highlighted that one of the singular elements of this celebration is going to be the presence of the original score of Bayamo’s National Anthem, thanks to the collaboration and kindness of the Museum of Music, since this is the first time it authorizes the experts to take the piece out of the preservation enclosure and send it to its home town.
This musical piece was composed by Perucho Figueredo and played by the people of Bayamo on October 20, 1868, when the mambises freed the village from the Spanish army, and in order to honor that emblematic date, the Fiesta de la Cubanía will be officially inaugurated with the intonation of the notes at the Anthem Square and the participation of one of Bayamo’s eminent children, Cuban writer Ambrosio Fornet, National Literature Award.
According to Carlos Rodríguez, there will be five days of intense festivities. The proposals announced include the opening of the 21st edition of Nationality Melting Pot event, Corcel del Cauto First Screening of Short Films, a regional meeting of writers and editors, a homage to the 90 years of the versatile Cuban artist Luis Carbonell, a Show of Culinary Traditions, lecture and solo show by National Fine Arts Award Jose Villa Soberon, a fashion show by the Cuban Fund of Cultural Goods, and El Teatron humor club.
Likewise, the program features scientific panels, debates, presentations and book sales, popular and traditional crafts fair, art exhibitions and concerts, to keep the attendees in constant moment.
The production team of Excelencias del Caribe magazine will also count on a space in the vertiginous program to launch its 117th edition, dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Bayamo.
Journalist Magda Resik, communication director of the Office of Havana’s Historian, pointed out that the commemorative edition responds to the interest of Excelencias Group in shedding light on patrimonial matters by means of its most important publications, and affirmed the positive reaction of authorities in Bayamo has made the magazine creators proud.
“It has become a sort of gorgeous approach to what the city represents, but it’s also a celebration object since the magazine as such is a patrimonial object to celebrate what is going to occur in Bayamo”, she added.
This magazine is set to be launched there, you have all the information and in the same breath we’d like to join hands in this effort.
There are two interesting matters to deal with. The first one is the quality of Excelencias magazine, since it will be paying tribute to the 500 years of this amazing city. Excelencias Group is interested in tackling patrimonial matters on the group’s flagship publications, and we are proud to know that this magazine has been acclaimed by the authorities in Bayamo.
