Basque Minister Leads Tourism Delegation to New York City
The First Minister of the Basque Government, Patxi López, will preside over the presentation ceremony of the Basque Country’s tourist attractions in New York on Thursday, Oct. 20. The ceremony is one of the several commercial and promotional activities being performed by the First Minister in various cities in the United States.
On that day, 11 Basque businesspeople from the tourism sector will take part in a workshop with various New York tour operators and travel agents. Through Basquetour, the Basque Tourism Agency, the Ministry for Industry, Innovation, Trade and Tourism of the Basque Government will present its tourist attractions.
López hopes to present all of the Basque Countries’ tourist attractions and to encourage increasing numbers of U.S. tourists. The presentation will take place in Guastavino’s, an old market which has been converted into a building for organizing events which is located under Queensboro Bridge.
Teresa Barrenechea, the creator of the first Basque restaurant in New York, Maritxu, and the author of the best-selling Basque cookbook in the United States, will be responsible for presenting the ceremony, in which Wynton Marsalis, who was called by Time Magazine one of the 25 most influential people in the United States and one of the most important contemporary jazz musicians in the world, will also take part.
Additionally, Basque fashion is also present at this ceremony, as 12 dresses which are inspired by the various landscapes of the Basque Country will be displayed and which were designed by names in the Basque fashion industry such as Mercedes de Miguel, Ion Fiz, Modesto Lomba, Miriam Ocariz, Isabel Zapardíez, Alicia Rueda, Miguel Palacio, María Clé, Lemoniez, Minimil, Ian Mosh and J+G. Before this presentation ceremony, 11 tourism professionals from the Basque Country will take part in a workshop with tour operators and travel agents from the city of New York.
