Basic School Dictionary Gains Enthusiasts on the Internet

The online version of the Basic School Dictionary stands as one of the main scientific productions of the Santiago-based Applied Linguistics Center (CLA is the Spanish acronym), with a growing number of visits by people from countries like Mexico, Peru, United States and Germany.

Dr.SC. Leonel Ruiz Miyares, director of the CLA, pointed out that, despite all of this platform’s resources - videos, images and texts-, the last ones attract the most.

“We’re looking forward to spreading this valuable tool in Cuba as soon as possible, so it can be accessed on the national intranet, as it is presently hosted by servers of the Basque Country”, the executive said.

The online version of the Basic School Dictionary was created by the members of the Applied Linguistics Center and specialists from the Computer Sciences Faculty of the Basque Country. The CD format of this work was another result of this collaboration.

The online platform includes over 50 videos and more than 1,600 illustrations, nearly 12 thousand entries with 21 thousand meanings.

It’s extremely useful when it comes to studying Spanish language because it includes synonyms, antonyms, augmentatives, diminutives and idioms. The dictionary also stands out as it shows terms related to different fields of human knowledge, such as anatomy, physics, geometry, grammar, music and zoology.

The first electronic version of the Basic School Dictionary was put out in July 2005 and the latest update, the fourth one, in October 2013.
