Bahamas Names New Director General of Tourism

Bahamas Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe appointed Joy Ann Jibrilu as the new director general of tourism, replacing 30-year veteran David Johnson.

Johnson will become the new CEO of Hotel Corp. of the Bahamas as it transitions into the Tourism Development Corp. with a focus on increasing room inventory.

Jibrilu, a former lawyer, previously was director of the Bahamas Investment Authority within the office of the prime minister.

In her new post she will be supported by a team of young Bahamian professionals, including Ellison "Tommy" Thompson, the current deputy director general of tourism. Thompson now will assume responsibilities for global marketing.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has initiated a program that aims to increase market share by 4-5 percent by tapping into markets in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia as well as within the Caribbean.
