Baconao Park: A Ride in Time Back to Prehistory

One of the most picture-perfect sites in the country is nestled twenty kilometers away from Santiago de Cuba City. Baconao Park stands out with its Prehistory Valley where over 200 life-sized sculptures of primitive species take us back to the age when dinosaurs roamed the face of the planet.

The Prehistory Valley reaches its 25th anniversary and stands as one of the most sought-after sightseeing attractions in Santiago. Adults and children, locals and foreigners are attracted by the huge sculptures of dinosaurs, reptiles and birds that were created by applying an iron-cement technique and are scattered throughout 11 hectares.

Since the very beginning of the tour, visitors can observe sculptures of specimens from Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras, specifically their Tertiary and Quaternary stages. The Park’s cozy caved-like restaurant, with walls that display cave paintings, makes us travel back in time.

Undoubtedly, the most eye-catching work is the 12-meter-tall Cro-Magnon man, who carries a stone axe and symbolizes the human power to modify nature.

Baconao Park features several recreation places, as the Prehistory Valley also includes beaches, historic and nature museums, hotels, aquarium, rodeo and lagoon. Casa de Pedro El Cojo is one of the most famous places, located at Sigua beach and specialized in Cuban food.
