Avianca, TACA Airlines Report Increases in Passenger Numbers

The newest Latin American Star Alliance airline members are posting strong results in the first three quarters of 2012. Avianca TACA Holding carriers Avianca and TACA Airlines carried more than 17 million passengers in the first nine months of 2012, a 13.7 percent increase compared with the same period in 2011.

The two airlines carried 17,070,258 passengers in the first three quarters of 2012 compared with 15,009,112 passengers carried over the same period in 2011. During September 2012, Avianca, TACA and Avianca TACA Holding subsidiaries carried 1,975,827 travelers, a 15.2 percent increase compared with the same month in 2011, when the airlines carried a combined 1,715,405 passengers.

The newly combined airline company’s 2012 increases came in both domestic and international markets. Passengers sourced from the domestic markets of Colombia, Peru and Ecuador totaled 9,789,654 between January and September 2012, a 21 percent increase over the 8,082,676 passengers served in the same period of 2011.

Passengers sourced from international markets totaled 7,280,604 passengers in the first nine months of 2012, a 5.1 percent increase from the 6,926,436 passengers reported during the same period in 2011.

Earlier this year Avianca, TACA Airlines and Copa Airlines joined the Star Alliance, adding close to 50 new airports to the network, including the Copa Airlines hubs in Panama City, Panama, and Bogota, Colombia, and the Avianca, TACA Airlines hubs in Bogota; San Salvador, El Salvador; Lima, Peru; and San Jose, Costa Rica.
