Artex Comes Full of Surprises at the 25th Havana International Book Fair
The 25th edition of Havana International Book Fair is scheduled to take place on Feb 11-21, 2016, at its regular venue in San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress and Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro.
Just like in previous years, Artex, a Cuban company tasked with artistic and literary promotions, is going to be represented by its Ediciones Cubanas publishing house, as well as Bis Music record label and Soy Cubano exporting agency –the latter manages the www.mallcubano.com online marketing platform- in a bid to foster and sell such Cuban cultural products as music, craftworks, literature, fashion and others. They will be gathered at the institutional booth in La Cabaña’s vault D1.
A representation of Artex’s stores and cultural centers will be also deployed at the fairgrounds. Therefore, the utility goods that make up its leading line of products, Arte en Casa –leather, fashion, imitation jewelry and stationery-will be available at the company’s sales outlet, nestled in vault K7, in the children’s area in La Cabaña. Several gastronomic offers will be close at hand in the tents staked up around the ditch, a space where main food and drink outlets will be clustered.
Ediciones Cubanas is going to put on sale as many as 63 titles of its catalog, as well as 25 from Océano Publishing House, 200 from Random House and 198 delivered by TJP.
Moreover, four new books are going to be launched, as well as latest issue – 546 – of Cartelera magazine, also published by the company. Presentations are slated for the José Lezama Lima Hall in La Cabaña.
Programming:
Friday 12, 11:00 am, launch of Cartelera magazine, a tourism, cultural and business magazine. Cartelera is a monthly 32-page printed publication, both in English and Spanish languages, distributed in embassies, travel agencies and hotels in the Cuban capital.
Tuesday 16, 11:00 am, launch of Musica Cubana: la Aguja en el Surco, by Jose Reyes Fortun. The book comprises a rigorous research carried out by this musicologist on the development of phonographic records in Cuba since half of the 19th century, with the embryonic metal cylinder covered with wax, through the diversity of contemporary digital musical and audiovisual means. The author delivers a summary on soloists and bands, with different formats, whose recording styles helped them become popular, not only in terms of live performances, but in movies and the TV.
Wednesday 17, 2:00 p.m., rollout of Historia y Pasión del Automóvil en Cuba, by Marcelo I. Goraiuria. This book sheds light on the history of motor racing in Cuba, boldface names in this sport and developments related to these races since the very beginning.In the pages of this volume the author shows that we have also inherited a rich, and perhaps unknown, history of motor racing.
Thursday 18, 11:00 a.m., launch of Piedras y Sombras. Plazas de La Habana Vieja, by Maritza Verdaguer and Serguei Svoboba. Guided by the authors, this work helps us discover the beauty hidden between the shadows and stones of Havana’s squares, an area that once stood out as the beating heart of a powerful city.
On the other hand, Bis Music, Artex’s record label, is going to showcase children discography, as well as albums related to some of Ediciones Cubanas’ book.
Among the offers for children, it’s important to highlight such titles as: La Guarandinga by Rita del Prado and Duo Karma, Reír y Cantar by Omara Portuondo, Liuba canta a Teresita by Liuba Maria Hevia, La Magia de los Sueños by Lidis Lamoru and the album + DVD Ortodecimante, which comprises 40 orthographic rules that are sung by children.
Havana’s International Book Fair, with Artex’s cultural tourism agency, Paradiso, as the official incoming agency, is the utmost event for the Cuban publishing movement since its creation back in 1982, and the most agglutinating cultural event in the country. Beyond a space to buy books and talk to the authors, it has become a stage to show the dynamism of cultural life in Cuba.
