Argentine company opens tour flights to Antarctica

Experience Antarctica, an Argentina-based company, has started out a number of tour flights to the South Pole from the city of Ushuahia, in the southernmost tip of the country at a price tag of $1,470 apiece.

The tourist service for one-day trippers will use a C-130 cargo plane seating up to 70 passengers who will pay a four-hour visit to the Antarctic scientific base of Marambio, a property of the Argentine Air Force.

During the flight, travelers will take a bird’s-eye view of Tierra del Fuego and the huge drifting icebergs Antarctica plucks off year in and year out. A glimpse at the entire South Pole icy scenery is no doubt another must-see, said Gustavo Garofalo of Experience Antarctica Co.

Mr. Garofalo told Caribbean News Digital the first flight –scheduled to take off next January 16- is sold out now. Two more flights will be available to the public in mid February and early March, right in the peak of the southern hemisphere’s summertime season.

Tourists will be accompanied by guides trained in Antarctic wildlife and geography. All visits are subject to strict safety measures in order to guarantee environmental protection.
