Antigua Named Best Beach Destination

The twin island nation of Antigua and Barbuda has been named ‘Best Beach Destination’ at the first Luxury Travel Readers Awards.

The award was presented last January at an exclusive lunch held in Hammersmith, London. The Luxury Travel Reader Awards recognizes excellence across the world, making this a much coveted prize.

The Honorable Dr Carl Roberts, High Commissioner for Antigua and Barbuda attended the event to receive the award on behalf of his country.

Antigua and Barbuda’s beaches afford beachgoers the luxury of privacy and beauty with numerous bays and coves to explore. The great majority of beaches rest inside the calm, protected waters of the island’s Caribbean side. All are open to the public, and so the challenge posed to a visitor is simply which ones to visit.

Popular beaches include Jolly Beach, Galley Bay, Ffryes Bay, Darkwood Beach, Dickinson Bay, Pigeon Bay and Turners Beach. On the Atlantic coast, beaches for the more active, such as Jabberwock, offer great conditions for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Antigua’s sister island Barbuda must not be forgotten with its untouched and unique stretches of pink sandy coastline.

In July 2006, Antigua saw off strong competition to be voted by editors of http://www.expedia.co.uk/ as Number One in the Top-10 Beach Destinations list. The list also included three other Caribbean islands, making Antigua and Barbuda the top islands of choice for a holiday in the Caribbean.
