American Airlines to Restore Flights between USVI and the Continental U.S.

American Airlines plans to restore some direct flights between the U.S. Virgin Islands and mainland America later this year. USVI Government officials are happy with the good news since it will boost the territory’s tourism and economy.

In late May, the airline announced plans to reduce flights in order to help the carrier save money on fuel costs. In the Caribbean, those cuts dramatically reduced American Airlines flights out of San Juan, Puerto Rico –the carrier’s major hub in the Caribbean and to the Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Islands Daily News reported that at Wednesday’s Port Authority board meeting, the Commissioner of Tourism, Beverly Nicholson-Daly announced that American Airlines had notified her that they plan to restore some flights, starting in November.

Some of the flights will include a daily New York to St. Thomas flight and a second flight on Fridays. There will also be twice daily flights from Miami to St Thomas and twice weekly Boston to St Thomas. These flights will take effect between the months of November and December.
