Airport in Cuba’s central region is broadened

Rogelio Acevedo, president of Cuba’s Civil Aviation Institute, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the now enhanced Abel Santamaria International Airport in Santa Clara –right in the heart of the island nation. The terminal will now ease the flow of vacationers to the tourist circuit of Villa Clara.

The lengthening of the runway and installation of new lighting fixtures, as well as the improvement of the terminal, will guarantee the landing of larger aircraft and the coming of more passengers. The new project also adds more flights between Europe and other regions in the world. In the past, those connections were only possible through Canada.

Refurbishment works now help pave the way for the amazing headway recently made by Villa Clara’s northern keys. According to Mr. Acevedo, the goal is to create an airport infrastructure buildup two to three years ahead of the area’s tourist development in an effort to make both activities go hand in hand with each other.

Mr. Acevedo said this airport took in almost twice as many passengers through last year, a figure that highlights the timeliness of the investment package. Mr. Acevedo also announced the construction of a second terminal a few years from now as tourist demands of Cuba’s central region accrue.
