Airlines Take Up the Slack as AirTran Cuts Routes

Small airlines are filling the void left by AirTran Airways when its parent company decided to cut routes in and out of certain smaller cities, including some flights to Orlando International Airport.

Denver-based Frontier Airlines said last week it will add nonstop service between Orlando and Bloomington, Ill., an airport that is set to lose its AirTran flights in June. The service will operate three days a week, starting May 25.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant has also taken an interest in Bloomington, saying it will serve the airport from Orlando Sanford International Airport.

Frontier's announcement came just a day after it said it would serve Allentown, Pa., and Harrisburg, Pa., two other regional airports that are slated to lose AirTran service later this year.
